THE HF REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 13

Conditions worsened this past week with the Solar Flux Index dropping under 100, but returned to a more moderate number in time for the CQ World Wide Worked All Prefixes contest over the weekend.  Band conditions were not steady - some DX would drop into your lap while some was elusive and simply too faint to work.
Currently:      Sunspot number: 80           Solar Flux Index: 110

COMING UP -

Now through Friday midnight, zulu, the School Club Roundup continues.  All modes, most bands.  If you hear a school radio club calling, they do want to work you.   Exchange is reception report, class and state.  Your class would be "Individual".
www.arrl.org/school-club-roundup

This weekend is one of the biggies.  The ARRL International CW DX Contest.  This is one of the four contests each year for which K3LR fires up a fully manned effort.  For the exchange U.S. stations send reception report and state.  DX stations will be sending reception report and station power.  U.S. stations get no points for working us, DX stations are looking for you.  A good chance to put some rarer DX into the logbook.
www.arrl.org/contests

Also this weekend is the AM QSO party sponsored by the Antique Wireless Association.  This laid back event has an exchange of reception report, name and state.  Expect to dawdle and have a QSO.

THE HF REPORT FOR JANUARY 23

Overall, band conditions have been good with some surprising propagation popping up from time to time.  Ten meters continues to hold surprise propagation but seems dead a good part of the time.
Current conditions:        Sunspot number: 103       Solar Flux Index: 141

COMING UP -

A special treat this week for EARS members.  Super Station K3LR, our friend Tim Duffy, will be on the air 8:00 Wednesday night from Pennsylvania.  Our plans are to start out at  14.250 or as close thereto as traffic permits.  After everyone has had a chance to work this monster station on 20 meters, we very likely will try 40, 75 and even the top band, 160 meters.  The frequencies are geared for General Licenses.  So tune in 14.250 on Wednesday night at 8:00 Oklahoma time to work a friend in Pennsylvania.

This weekend is the CQ World Wide CW contest on 160 meters.  Top band contest participants are looking for a reception report and your state.
www.cq160.com

The French REF contest is this weekend in CW.  Exchange is reception report and serial number.  If working a French station, they will give you reception report and their department. Treat the department like a state report on your log.

Saturday through Sunday is Winter Field Day.  Not an ARRL event, but sponsored by the Society for the Preservation of Amateur Radio - SPAR.  Exchange is call sign, true reception report, number of operators, whether inside or outside, and current temperature in Fahrenheit or centigrade.

THE HF REPORT FOR JANUARY 30

Propagation has improved.  The large Coronal Mass Ejection really made the bands noisy, caused propagation to fluctuate dramatically and produced vivid displays of the aurora borealis....which you've probably seen....they made all the network newscasts.  An even larger CME Friday will not affect us, as it was aimed away from earth.

Current conditions -         Sunspot number: 74       Solar Flux Index: 110

COMING UP -

The European PSK Club is holding the WW PSK Contest this weekend.  They do want to work us.  Exchange is signal report and serial number - as always, start with the number "1".

DX CODE OF CONDUCT

I will listen, and listen, and then listen again before calling.

I will only call if I can copy the DX statio properly.

I will not trust the DX cluster and will be sure of the DX station's call sign before calling.

I will not interfere with the DX station nor anyone calling and will never tune up on the DX frequency or in the QSX slot.

I will wait for the DX station to end a contact before I call.

I will always send my full call sign.

I will call and then listen for a reasonable interval.  I will not call continuously.

I will not transmit when the DX operator calls another call sign, not mine.

I will not transmit when the DX station requests geographic areas other than mine.

When the DX operator calls me, I will not repeat my call sign unless I think he has copied it incorrectly.

I will be thankful if and when I do make a contact.

I will respect my fellow hams and conduct myself so as to earn their respect.

For further discussion and specifics of the code, see:
